Barrah Sisters' Halaqa started November 2013 as a bi-monthly meeting occurring at Masjid WD Mohammed in Houston, TX. It was formed for women for the purposes of individual & group study. Women (18+) of diverse age, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds gathered to learn & grow as Muslims.
In 2020, the halaqa began meeting online due to health concerns posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The space continued to thrive. It began to expand as word spread and women outside of Houston began to participate. Sisters (ranging in age from the 20s-80s) attend from most regions of the US. There is no membership requirements; women participate as frequently as their availability & desire allows. It continues to meet online (via Zoom) on the 2nd & 4th Saturdays of every month at 7:30am CST.
PURPOSE
The purpose of Barrah Sisters' Halaqa is to study the Quran, the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW, & other noble people to gain a deeper understanding of how to be better servants of Allah SWT. We aim to create a safe, supportive space where women can share openly and learn from each other.
PRINCIPLES
Barrah Sisters' Halaqa is a study & discussion group; not lecture-based. We encourage research on discussion topics before & after each session. We share our reflections based on individual study, experiences, and group discussion. We are open to information from diverse scholarship. We do not have a preference for specific schools of thought, scholars, or texts. We respect differences of opinion, experience, and levels of understanding.
O Allah, increase us in beneficial knowledge, soften our hearts,
and make us among those who embody kindness.
